Having a child can be one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. Conversely, the inability to have one can be soul-destroying. Infertility, the inability to conceive and/or carry a baby to term can come between couples, tear even the strongest of relationships apart, and lead to years of sorrow and feelings of low self-worth. The cost of In-Vitro-Fertilisation (IVF) can be worth it IF it works, but financially crippling whether it does work or not.
A considerable portion of my life, both professional and personal, has centred on fertility and birth. As a Registered Nurse I delivered a small number of babies myself. My wife, Anne, was a Midwife in the UK, and has worked with pre-term babies in Wellington, ever since we migrated to NZ. In one of my previous jobs I was Quality & Projects Facilitator for the Women's Health Service at Capital and Coast District Health Board, covering Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Maternity Units in Wellington, Porirua and on the Kapiti Coast.
It was not surprising then, that when the chance arose for me to study a Hypnotherapy course specifically for fertility and childbirth, that I would be interested. More than that, if you were to research locally, you would find that I was the first Wellington & Hutt based Hypnotherapist to gain certification through the HypnoFertility Foundation Inc. (US)
Infertility can lead to tremendous stress and strain on even the strongest of relationships, and could even lead to some couples breaking up. Medical fertility treatments, such as tests, drugs and courses of In-Vitro-Fertilisation (IVF)** can lead to costs of thousands of dollars, all of which adds an extra financial burden on couples already trying to cope with the realities of infertility.
But even after spending thousands of dollars and shedding even more tears, some couples frustratingly receive unwelcome news from their doctor.
Unexplained Infertility is the term applied when mainstream healthcare cannot explain the medical cause of infertility.
Secondary Infertility is the term applied when you have successfully carried at least 1 baby to term, but then cannot become pregnant again, and medical tests cannot find a cause.
Male Infertility issues, such as impotence and erectile dysfunction
HypnoFertility addresses these conditions and more.
But that does not mean that all hope is lost! As a Clinical Hypnotherapist I understand how your beliefs can effect the function of your autonomic nervous system, and how, by changing those beliefs, you can sometimes change the way your autonomic nervous system works. This includes your reproductive system. For example, if your mind has been constantly bombarded throughout your lifetime with suggestions such as "you would make a terrible mother", or "both your sisters couldn't have babies, so what chance have you got?", then there is a danger that these suggestions have been accepted as beliefs by your subconscious mind. That being the case, your subconscious would do its job of defending your beliefs, and making sure that you cannot be a bad mother, simply by making sure you don't become a mother at all. It is at this point, when all medical reasons for infertility have been eliminated, that HypnoFertility comes into its own.
HypnoFertility (a.k.a. Fertility by Hypnosis)
The Fertility by Hypnosis process is utilised specifically to change the limiting beliefs you may have accepted about your inability to conceive. Those beliefs influence the way your autonomic nervous system works. The constant reinforcement of negative opinions about your parenting abilities through phrases like "you're unfit to be a mother" and "you'll never make a decent parent", can drill down into your psyche over time. This can change your beliefs and autonomic responses, leading potentially to infertility without apparent physical cause, or what is sometimes called unexplained infertility. Changing these beliefs to one in which parenting is possible can improve prospects of fertility at a belief level. For example, some couples may resort to adopting a child once they have reluctantly accepted the medical conclusion of undiagnosed infertility. But there are many stories of couples who adopt a child, only to then have a child by natural means. How could this happen? Medical mistake is one possibility. But another, more likely possibility, is that your beliefs have changed. If you had accepted a belief, at a subconscious level, that you could not be a good parent, and then you adopt a child and find that you can be a good parent, this changes your established belief from "I can't" to "I can", and then you can become pregnant.
Hypnosis can change these beliefs and the autonomic responses they control in just a few sessions, and at far less cost than IVF.
Fertility by Hypnosis may be used with or without IVF
Birth by Hypnosis
The Birth by Hypnosis process extends from the moment of conception to the moments just after childbirth. When working together our focus will be upon influencing the unconscious beliefs, autonomic processes and behaviours which affect each trimester of your pregnancy. Issues which can be addressed include, but are not limited to, morning sickness, high blood-pressure, sleep issues and postural pain. Most importantly you can look forward to a comfortable labour, as you learn to control pain with your mind instead of painkillers. This is by far the most popular aspect of Birth by Hypnosis.

Testimonial: Hypnosis for Conception & Fertility
"After 2 1/2 years of trying to conceive, having a number of tests which came back saying my partner and I were all OK, I looked to myself and wondered if it was more a mental barrier stopping the miracle of pregnancy occurring. Counting days, then the disappointment of not being pregnant did seem to take its toll after this length of time, and my optimism seemed to diminish month after month. I was lucky enough to come across Andrew's website, and after having a conversation via the phone, I felt Hypnotherapy was definitely worthwhile to get me in the right head space and visualize myself being a mum. I came out of my first session with Andrew looking at the "glass half full again", and believed it was only a matter of time until I became a mum. So here we are 5 weeks later, and I'm happy to announce I'm pregnant for the first time, and couldn't be happier! I'm sure there are a lot of people who have been in the same situation, and as well as being physically ready you need to be emotional, and visualize this happening. I wish you all the best if you are heading down this path, as I look forward to the amazing journey my partner and I now have ahead of us."
